FORMATION COMMITTEE

Mike Mattingly Chairperson
Connie Mattingly Co-Chairperson
Kathy Shannon Pastoral Associate

The Formation Committee of St. Augustine advocates the vision of faith formation and education in the parish. It upholds the teaching of Catholic beliefs, traditions and values in the context of deepening spirituality and lifelong religious formation.

Formation in the parish includes:

Adult Formation and Education - The purpose of this committee is to provide enriching programs that assist adult parishioners in developing a living, conscious and active faith as a Christian community. Programs of various lengths are offered throughout the year to train catechists or offer information on a particular liturgical season or desired topic. Formation of the spiritual and physical person is addressed.

Baptism Preparation - This process helps to prepare parents and Godparents of children to be baptized for the reception of the Sacrament and help them accept their responsibility for Christian parenting. These meetings are held in the Parish Center four times a year. This ministry is open to couples who wish to help prepare others for the Sacrament of Baptism.

Booster Club - The St. Augustine Booster Club is a group of parents interested in promoting and supporting athletic programs. The Booster Club is a subcommittee and reports to the St. Augustine Formation Committee.

Children’s Liturgy – Children ages 3-7 are encouraged to participate in a specifically designed liturgy that is age appropriate. We dismiss the children from the 11:00 a.m. Mass after the opening prayer and they return at the Preparation of the Gifts. Volunteer parents are assigned specific weeks to facilitate the sessions. We offer Children’s Liturgy from Labor Day to Memorial Day each year.

Marriage Preparation - The decision to marry may well be the most important decision of your life. The Foundation of Marriage program offers the opportunity to spend, as a couple, some time in thought, conversation, and prayer, in pleasant relaxed surroundings, and in the company of others in love as you are. The archdiocese of Louisville offers this program to all engaged couples.

Parish Elementary Religious Education - This program provides religious formation and education for children in grades K-8 who are not enrolled in a Catholic School. The program is designed to teach the children prayers, scripture and Catholic faith traditions. Classes meet every Wednesday evening from 6:45-8:00 p.m. beginning in August and ending in May.

Parish School - St. Augustine Catholic School (pre-K-8) is one of the missions of St. Augustine Parish. It involves a significant commitment of resources and support for the future of our parish, our community and our Church. As stated in our mission statement: “St. Augustine Catholic School...exists to assist parents in the faith formation and education of their children...we provide a program and process based on proven educational theories and the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church.”  For more information link to St. A School.

Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) and for Children - RCIA is a process of prayer, scripture study and faith-sharing to assist adults and children in their faith journey in becoming full members of the Catholic Church. Any Catholic who wishes to renew his/her own faith is also welcome. Classes meet Thursday evenings, from August through May, at 7:00 p.m. in the parish center.

Sacramental Programs - St. Augustine provides sacramental preparation programs for Baptism, Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, Confirmation and Marriage. Each program is specifically created to enrich both the adult’s and the child’s Catholic faith development. Community-building and faith-sharing are important aspects of each sacrament.  First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation, have at least a two year preparation period of formation before reception.

Senior Citizens - St. Augustine Senior Citizens, age 50 and older, gather once a month from September through May to share fellowship. The program consists of three different types of gatherings, educational meetings, pot-luck socials and trips.

Vacation Bible School - A one-week Vacation Bible School is offered each summer in June. Its goal is to enhance the children’s faith development through songs, bible stories, crafts, drama, games and activities all centered around one chosen Christian theme. Children ages 5-11 may attend.

Vocation Committee – The Vocations committee is designed to help parish members become more aware of  everyone’s call to a vocation.  A special emphasis is placed on clergy and religious vocations.

Young Adult Ministry - Young Adults ages 19-35 are encouraged to participate in various activities offered throughout the year. This ministry is to enhance Christian fellowship, prayer and formation within participants’ daily lives.

Youth Ministry - The Youth Program is for all youth in grades 7-12, giving them the opportunity to continue their Catholic faith and share in Christian fellowship, outreach and socialization. They meet each Sunday from 5:00-8:00 PM in the Parish Center.
